The future of radio [Discussion/debate]? - Page 2 Empty The future of radio [Discussion/debate]?

Post by Brandon Sun 15 Mar 2015, 12:26 pm

First topic message reminder :

Hello,

I am creating this thread, because I think this is an interesting subject to have a discussion and/or debate on. Radio is a constantly evolving industry; with technology growing and becoming more portable, advanced and effeicient, one must begin to wonder how this effects radio. With the constant opening of internet radio stations and the internet becoming more widely available across the world and more and more devices being able to connect to the web, one must wonder what the fate of Radio, both AM and FM lies, will internet radio someday take the place of actual AM/FM Radio? I mean there are millions of free to listen to internet radio stations out there. They are cheaper to run, can be heard anywhere in the world (with internet access). Which is where Fm and Am radio suffer and is really un changeable.

So, with all of that said, where does the future (and fate) of radio lie? With whom does it lie? These are things that can be discussed and debated here. It is unlikely that everyone will agree on exactly where the future of radio may lie, but it is nice to hear people's opinion and theories on where it may lie.

Another plus for privately owned internet radio stations, there tons that are commericial free. Which is what BG Radio Network is, 100% commericial free. Very Happy

AM and FM stations are still around now but it seems they will be more using the internet so people can listen to them online. It seems more of these digital music channels mostly play a lot of music with no commericals at all. On FM and AM stations you would hear a lot more commericals on these stations. Digital radio stations are making it more about the music and less about the commericals if you see what I mean Smile

I thin one day, many years from now, fm and am radio will go away completely and will be replaced by online radio.

It could be online. Not sure if there will still be FM and AM stations. It could be all digital like it is now. I know they even have radio stations on cable or satellite that play music non stop with no commercials at all Smile

Well I think if there is a way for cars to tune in to internet radio, while maintaining hands free, the world would totall move to online only, as an online radio station costs very little to run in comparison to an fm or am one.

I think while cars and vehicles in general still have fm and am radios in them, I think both media forms will be around.

I doubt we will move completely online anytime in the next 10 years or maybe more. One day, however, as technology continues to advance, I think we may see online only station.

well, probably not completely online or completely satellite radio either,  as Satellite radio requires a paid subscription, radio signals will continue to exist in a free form for some time as many can't or wont pay for the  satellite radio subscription, which is how the satellite radio can operate commercial free

Yes but most internet radio stations are free to listen in to. The only current hiccup preventing that from being the complete mode of radio besides satellite is the fact you can't listen to it in your car without a smart phone plugged in to a stereo, even then it requires the internet to be online the whole time.

If that hiccup is ever resolved and all cars somehow get their own reliable internet, then yes it is possible internet radio could abolish fm/am radio. Even if it is not likely to happen in the next couple decades.
